Dr. Tafuna is originally from Kolomotua, Tonga. He graduated from the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa with a double major in history and sociology. He obtained a Master of Science degree in criminal justice administration from Chaminade University and a Master of Arts and doctorate degree in clinical psychology from the Hawai‘i School of Professional Psychology at Argosy University.

Dr. Tafuna’s training and work experience include service at Tripler Army Medical Center in the behavioral health unit working with active military members and their families. While his work took him to the Wasatch Mental Health facility in Utah, he eventually returned to Hawai‘i where he provided services at The Family Strengthening Center, working with clients from both Child Welfare Services and Family Court. Subsequently, he was part of the treatment team at the Hawaiʻi State Hospital that managed the intake and acute unit, as well as the Department of Public Safety where he managed the acute mental health unit.

Dr. Tafuna has many professional passions which include helping marginalized populations, especially Pacific Islanders. He lives in Ka‘a‘awa and enjoys outdoor activities and spending quality time with family and friends.
